Dan Houser previews GTA IV to the AP

Dan Houser, the vice president of Rockstar Games recently gave a 90 minute preview to the Associated Press (AP) which bore just a few new snippets of information. The Boston Herald published an article yesterday which gives a couple of noteworthy points.

The only new bit of information given is the fact there will be over 100 fictitious in-game websites to access from Liberty City's computers, one of which is LibertyCityPolice.com. The other interesting point was Dan Houser talking about his favourite mission in GTA IV.

players are tasked with assassinating a character who’s laid up in the hospital. How gamers achieve this goal is completely up to them, whether they decide to quietly sneak in through a window, boisterously bust through the front door guns blazin’ or don scrubs and simply turn off the mark’s life support.

"We’re giving the player choices without ramming it down their throats," said Houser. "They even have a choice at the key moment in the whole story. I don’t want to go into too much detail about it, but I think putting that into the hands of the player is very fun."

You can read the full article if you're interested, but apart from the aforementioned snippets there's nothing new.

GTA IV Marketing Campaign in NYC

You may remember a news story before Christmas last year about a couple of advertising posters for GTA IV that appeared on the streets of Belgium. Those weren't final versions and were not meant to be put up. However, it appears the final versions are now in circulation thanks to a photograph from Flickr user freshyill.

The poster shows an email address, tips@libertycitypolice.com, which if you send an email to will auto-respond with a piece of artwork and message informing you they're all out to lunch.

The email response: see it here

IGN: NaturalMotion's Euphoria Technology

By Chris | 25th Jan 2008 at 04:05 GMT in GTA IV | 18 Comments
IGN Australia have a new article up discussing the euphoria middleware developed by NaturalMotion, which is being used by Rockstar Games in GTA IV. The article goes into detail about how we'll see the euphoria technology used for amazingly realistic physics in the game. Here's just one quote from the article describing one example scenario:

During car chases, this also comes into play pretty spectacularly. Niko, as well as enemies in the game, are affected by inertia – to the point where rear-ending a car causes people in the front to fly through the windshield and into the air, arms in a controlled flail. The impact is sickening and realistic; bodies don't just ragdoll in GTA IV, they roll end over end or side-on, before coming to a natural pause.

Read the full article at IGN for more on this interesting subject.

PS3 Was Partly to Blame For GTA IV Delay

But not entirely. Jeronimo Barrera, President of Product Development at Rockstar Games was recently interviewed by MTV, when asked about the delay he said:

It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that. Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical.

And on a sidenote, Barrera also confirmed that cheat codes will indeed be available to use in-game:

"For gamers who only want to cause havoc, the game will offer that and the standard amount of weapon-unlock cheat codes."

Thanks to Jordan for the heads up.

New GTA IV Previews and Media Hit The Web

23

2008
By Chris | 23rd Jan 2008 at 17:38 GMT in GTA IV | 22 Comments
The websites we mentioned in earlier posts are all publishing their previews and new media from R* today. New, unwatermarked screenshots are at the bottom of this post.

Websites with new content: IGN, GameSpot, Kikizo, GameSpy, ComputerAndVideogames, GamesRadar, TeamXbox, VideoGamer. Based on the sheer amount of information covered, we suggest reading Kikizo's mammoth 8 page preview - they even drew a map of Liberty City from memory! Below is a brief summary of some of the new/updated information from the previews, however, I recommend reading one of the full previews if you want to know everything.
  • Websites received a 90 minute demonstration
  • The stuttering frame rate has now been smoothed out and the city is now fully populated
  • A new style of wanted meter has been implemented - this has already been briefly mentioned, but in case you don't know, "A circle appears on the map around your car and if the cops are outside that circle the wanted status will decrease."
  • Drive-by shootings are now easier - "In an example of the increased physicality of the new GTA, Niko smashed out the driver's side window with his elbow before pulling out a pistol. Indeed, guns can now be controlled with the right analogue stick, making it easier to shoot out tires to end a chase quickly."
  • GTA IV will now auto-save progress after important mission way-points.
  • If you fail a mission you'll be given the option to jump straight back in and have another attempt, using text messages on Niko's mobile.
  • Currently two minutes equates to one hour of game-time, although that is subject to change.
  • Niko can listen to music whilst on foot, using the phone. "Sound quality is, as you'd expect from a mobile, realistically tinny and having the soundtrack accompanying you on foot is a welcome addition"
  • Liberty City has a subway system which Niko is able to use.
  • It took roughly 5 minutes (real time) to pilot a speedboat round half of Algonquin.
  • A new character called Bell is revealed
  • Characters wear different clothes instead of wearing the exact same outfit through the entire game (as in previous GTAs)
  • Building relationships with characters is important. Some will meet you rather than you meeting them. Being on bad terms with them won't help you.
  • Pool, eating, darts, bowling and going for a drink are some of the activities you're able to do (using the phone to access them)
  • There is a radio station called IF99.
  • In this demo, the cell network is called Badger whereas in previous demos we learned it was called Whiz.

Once Niko has the car away from the attention of the cops he can access the police database, via the onboard police computer. By tapping in the name of the informant Niko is able to pinpoint his home address – Long Street in Broker, which would be our next stop. Interestingly, Rockstar mentioned it would also be possible to upload photos of people from your phone's camera into the database to attain details as well

Just one week after releasing the first developer preview of MTA San Andreas Deathmatch, the MTA team have already pushed out their second release of the mod!

today we're releasing Developer Preview 2! As we said last week, we're focusing on fixing bugs, so all your new feature requests aren't in this release. That said, we've added a few new things to this release that you asked for - windowed mode for scripters being the most significant. We've also fixed about 17 bugs and made a few tweaks here and there and we've included some updated gamemodes and maps

So how's that for quick fixes and updates? I have updated our download page with this latest update, so you can get developer preview 2 of download MTASA Deathmatch here.

Visit MultiTheftAuto.com for more information on the mod, and for developers - the scripting wiki, where you'll find a wealth of information on developing gamemodes and maps for Multi Theft Auto with extensive documentation on over 800 scripting functions.

That's according to German gaming website Cynamite.de. The site claims that an unknown Rockstar spokesperson has confirmed that a fourth trailer for GTA IV will be released before the game comes out, and like previous trailers will show cinematic scenes rather than actual gameplay footage.
No release date for the trailer has been announced by Rockstar as of yet, but we'll keep you updated on that.

Rockstar Games titles now available via Steam

By Chris | 4th Jan 2008 at 22:44 GMT in General | 9 Comments
Rockstar Games today announced that Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas are now available via Valve's Steam client, a popular service used to digitally distribute games. In addition to the aforementioned GTA titles, Max Payne 1 and 2, Manhunt and Midnight Club 2 can also be downloaded through the software.
As well as being individually priced between $13.95 and $22.95, two bundles are available through the service, the "Grand Theft Auto Collection" and the "Rockstar Collection", priced $43.45 and $69.95 respectively. The former includes the 3 GTA games mentioned before, as well as GTA1 and 2. The latter bundle is simply all of the titles we've mentioned. Buy before January 11th and you'll get a 10% discount!

This news follows the recent announcement that Rockstar had made a deal with Direct2Drive, IGN's digital distribution service for PC games, where similarly priced bundles were also made available (albeit limited to North American gamers only).

First MTA San Andreas Deathmatch Client Released

03
Jan
2008
By Chris | 3rd Jan 2008 at 02:28 GMT in San Andreas | 6 Comments
It's been quite a long time since we've posted any news about the Multi Theft Auto Team and their efforts in making GTA: San Andreas a multiplayer game, but finally they've made a developer preview of the deathmatch client available to everyone. If you already play MTA you'll be aware that one of the major drawbacks is that it currently only functions as a racing mod - this one changes all that with the much anticipated deathmatch mode.

Since it's a beta mod and obviously still in development, bugs and glitches are to be expected, if you just want to get and play the game with others, head to the MTASA Deathmatch download page (which we'll update whenever they release new versions).

GTA IV Map Partially Revealed?

GTAForums member BlueSpot has spotted what could well be the map of Liberty City in a scene in the third trailer. The screenshot (below) shows what we believe to be the map. From the left we can assume this would be Alderney (cut off), Algonquin in the middle, Broker on the right, and Bohan at the top.

Obviously we can't tell for sure due to the lack of detail, but it's an interesting find nonetheless.
