BUMP!!!
OUCH! You will need to change the hierarchy names of each part, I have done this with Zmodeler before but the other direction I placed a bike from VC to GTA3. Very tough. I will make you up a tutorial on this and get back to you on it.
If you use something other than Zmodeler let me know.

OK here you go this should explain what you need to do.
Run Zmodeler and import your GTA dff if you want the textures to appear you must have the TGA's images in the same directory.
ScrShot001.png (48.01K)
Number of downloads: 61
Here I am loading the diablos.dff and because I didn't extra the tga it has no texture.
ScrShot002.png (113.04K)
Number of downloads: 43
Go to Tools -> Hierarchy -> Browser...
ScrShot003.png (101.86K)
Number of downloads: 46
Now examine the tree this tree MUST be this format to run any vehicle in GTA 3
ScrShot006.png (99.04K)
Number of downloads: 43
ScrShot007.png (97.47K)
Number of downloads: 37
Next close that file out or you will import on top of this model. I imported the Hermes from Vice City.
ScrShot008.png (109.39K)
Number of downloads: 38
You will notice some small changes made in the table between versions.
I can import one car on top of another and then make notes of which files need renaming and removed.
ScrShot009.png (96.97K)
Number of downloads: 30
ScrShot010.png (105.11K)
Number of downloads: 24
ScrShot011.png (104.94K)
Number of downloads: 32
Clicking on the list of objects on the right will bring up a menu:
ScrShot012.png (3.34K)
Number of downloads: 25
Renaming is the easy part then you can drag and drop the items in the correct position in the tree.
Export and test your model. Good luck it is hard work and you will get frustrated but it will be worth it in the end.

As I said Zmodeler the original beta is free version 2 will cost $60. The only other I know that is free to use is Blender and you need the import/export script to use it. I don't know many people that have the funds to shell out for 3D Studio Max. So... I don't use it and never will with the powerful freeware and shareware available to the public.
