  Intro

I didn't write a walk-through for the PC version of "III" so I added more
stuff to my starter package for it. This includes

  - a starter save and some subsequent saves up to 100% completion

  - a condensed version of Robert Rusk's walk-through for "GTA III" with some of
my tips, PC-specific and otherwise

  - a handful of modded handling.cfg files, and instructions on installation and
how to mod those files yourself

  - Alper Saracoglu's Administrative Console, a couple of files you can add to
the Program Files > GTA3Console folder to give it a lot of extra teleport loca-
tions, and instructions on installation and how to add teleport locations your-
self

  - YoYo's 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible, related files I modded, and in-
structions on how to install them and mod such files yourself

  - a folder about "Max Pain's Modded GTA 3 v.2," which lets you try out a lot
of the mods for "III"

  - a starter save for "GTAIII XBOX Version" by rmws

  - files modded to increase clipping distance, draw distance, and diminish fog,
and instructions on how to install them and mod such files yourself

  - maps

  - Mafia Titanic Posters and Billboards--my mod to change several of the bill-
boards and posters in Liberty City to show the "Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven"
version of the movie poster for "Titanic," 1997, that featured the "I'm flying"
scene.

  - "Sitting Duck Gangs"--my variation on the mod to prevent gangs from attack-
ing Claude which makes it easier for him to attack them, too, and instructions
on how to install the pedstats.dat file and mod it yourself

  - "GTA III Hidden Package and Rampage Finder"--it puts a vertical row of
flashing balls of light over each Hidden Package and Rampage pickup.

  - links for a lot of the mods, tools, videos, etc., and my explanations for
gimmicks and secrets, etc.

  Save game files

The "SaveGameFiles" folder has a starter save file, scattered saves up to a
100% completion save file, and installation instructions.

In the starter save Claude has done the Ambulance, Firetruck, and Vigilante
Sub-missions, and collected 100 Hidden Packages, so has pickups for Health,
Adrenaline, Armor, six Police Bribes, and weapons, including the Flamethrower,
at his Safehouses, and he has the infinite sprint. "Give Me Liberty" (driving
8-Ball to Luigi's Club) and "Luigi's Girls" (driving a prostitute from the hos-
pital to Luigi's Club) are done.

(Sorry about getting a perfect double insane stunt instead of leaving that
blank for you. I used my modded handling.cfg file for the Police car to do the
Vigilante mission on all three islands. If you try it with that modded han-
dling.cfg file, you'll soon see how insane stunts can accidentally liven up a
chase.)

After the second save, which can also be used as a starter save for "Max
Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0," I follow Rusk's mission order for 100% completion of
the game.

The garages have EP/DP/FP/BP vehicles which maintain those qualities if you
repair them and change their colors in a Pay 'n' Spray.

Robert A. Rusk's "GTA III" strategies condensed

The "GTA3RuskStrategiesCondensed" text file is my condensed version of his
"GTA III" walk-through, which can be found in unabridged form at the next link.
  http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/548931-grand-theft-auto-iii/faqs/28433

A special thanks to Robert Rusk, as I've given him many times before, for per-
mitting me to give a condensed version of his "GTA III" walk-through.
  http://rarusk.livejournal.com
rarusk[gnat]netzero[snot]com (replace [gnat] with @ and [snot] with .)

I added notes for strategies, such as by modding or using the Administrative
Console, etc., specific to the PC version and a few other things.

  Modded handling.cfg files

The "AmbFireTaxiPolRumpoHandlng" folder has several modded handling.cfg files
and the original handling.cfg. You can put one or more of them in the data
folder and rename them to take the preface off the one you want to use and add a
preface to any others.

  - Rumpo_handling.cfg: super Rumpo--it's fast, heavy, damage-proof, and has im-
proved traction and suspension.

  - Amb_Fire_Taxi_handling.cfg: super Ambulance, super Firetruck, and super Taxi
for doing the Paramedic, Fire Fighter, and Taxi Sub-missions.

  - Police_handling.cfg: super Police car for doing the Vigilante Sub-mission.
I made a separate modded handling.cfg for the Police car since you'd probably
want to minimize the chance of Claude being attacked by super Police cars.

All of the vehicles I made a handling.cfg file for are given a -1 for column
I, "nPercentSubmerged." If you have Claude drive one of them into water,
they'll drop into Blue (or Green) Hell for a couple of moments then appear on
nearby land.

YoYo's "1957 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible"

See the "1957ChevroletBelAir" folder if you want to use YoYo's 1957 Chevrolet
Bel Air, which replaces the Idaho, and related files of modded handling and
colors. It contains a ReadMe file.

I scoured the Internet for YoYo to ask for YoYo's permission, but YoYo seems
to have dropped out of the GTA community around 2003. I hope someone can bring
this to YoYo's attention and let me know if YoYo approves--I can be reached at
the first E-mail address listed below. I've submitted YoYo's mod with credit
and respect. Thanks to Yemil Aragon (aka Max Pain aka Nemo) for giving me per-
mission to distribute his "Max Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0" mod, which includes
YoYo's car.
  glenster@rediffmail.com
  yemil@hotmail.com
  http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/grandtheftauto3/download_6084107.html

I modded the .txd file to give the Chevy red and red-speckled black seats (the
kind on the '57 Chevrolet Bel Air my Dad had in the '50's and '60's) and New
York license plates from 2001 (the time of "GTA III").

Alper Saracoglu's GTA III "Administrative Console"

The "AdministrativeConsoleFiles" folder: see the part about trainers in the
section on mods below for more about Alper Saracoglu's GTA III "Administrative
Console."
  http://hobby.estetiksoft.de/
  http://files.dotbas.net/gta3console_setup.zip
  http://web.archive.org/web/20060219190906/www.estetiksoft.de/gta3con
sole/index.htm

A special thanks to Alper Saracoglu for giving me permission to distribute his
"GTA III" Administrative Console. Otherwise, he released it as free and with
open source code:

"I gave the source code for the gta3 console for free to help other modders.
It is nice to see that they made a use of it, and did not remove the link to my
server on the comments. When it is released, I will also release the source
code of the gta sa console for free. This is my free-time hobby, and everybody
should be able to make use of it."
  http://gtaforums.com/topic/198750-rel-gta-sa-admin-console-beta/page-4
  http://gtaforums.com/topic/210797-gta-sa-cd-looking-for-contributions/

If you're familiar with his GTA work, you know his consoles and control cen-
ters are among the things many of us would put on a short list of things we want
to supplement our PC GTA's.

The folder includes his Administrative Console, a "ReadMeByGTW" file with a
list of teleport locations I added and made hotkeys for, and "GTA3Console" and
"GTA3Locations" files.

The teleport locations I added include all the Off-Road Sub-mission pickup lo-
cations, the raised part--near a Hidden Package--of the Staunton-Shoreside Vale
lift bridge, the inside of Joey Leone's garage, Donald Love's penthouse, either
side of the bay at the south side of Shoreside Vale, etc.

Copy and Paste the "GTA3Console" and "GTA3Locations" files to Program Files >
GTA3 Console to replace the original files and have those locations and hotkeys
added to your Administrative Console.

I've included a re-formatted ReadMe file, "ReadMeByAlperSaracoglu," for the
GTA3 Console to make the original (found in Program Files > GTA3 Console) a bit
easier to read.

  Information about "Max Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0"

The "MaxPainsModdedGTA3Files" folder contains information about "Max Pain's
MODDED GTA3 v2.0," which lets you sample dozens of mods for cars, buildings,
etc., including some I've listed and given links for below.

The mod replaces the Sentinel with a two door car so you can't complete the
second Marty Chonks mission, and the Staunton TOYZ van doesn't appear for some
reason.

Since you can interchange save files with the modded and non-modded game, I
used the first save file I've included in the "SaveGameFiles" folder and did
"Drive Misty for Me" for Luigi to make Marty Chonks' missions available, the
first two Marty Chonks missions, and an effort with the Staunton TOYZ van for
the second save game file, which I'd recommend as a starter save file for the
mod.

Thanks to Yemil Aragon (Max Pain/Nemo) for giving me permission to distribute
his mod. It's too big (86.2 MB) for certain web sites to allow me to include it
with a starter game package, but you can download his mod from the site at the
next link.
  http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/grandtheftauto3/download_6084107.html

Starter save files for "GTAIII XBox Version" by rmws

The save files for this mod aren't compatible with the unmodded game so I put
a couple of starter save files for it in the "GTAIIIXBoxVersionStarterSaves"
folder. See the part about total conversions in the section below about mods
for more about this enjoyable improvement in the graphics for the PC version of
the game. If your computer's up to it, you might try combining it with:

  Draw distance

The "DrawDistance" folder contains files I modded to increase clipping dis-
tance, draw distance, and diminish fog. The ReadMe file in it has installation
instructions that explain where to Copy and Paste, and I supplied the original
files in case you want to go back to the unmodded draw distance, etc.

  Maps

The "Maps" folder contains maps I made for Health, Armor, Adrenaline Pills,
Bribes, Pay 'n' Sprays, Unique Stunt Jumps, TOYZ vans, Off-Road missions,
Phones, weapons, Ammu-Nations, Bomb Shops, the locations of the Import-Export
garages and Emergency Vehicle Crane, and the locations of the vehicles that have
spawn spots. (The Internet already has clear maps with few colors that are easy
to print for the locations of Hidden Packages and Rampages--see the links in the
next section.)

  Mafia Titanic Posters and Billboards

This mod changes several of the billboards and posters in Liberty City. If
you use the "parnik" code in the 2002 videogame "Mafia: The City of Lost Heav-
en," an elderly lady pedestrian and a copy of Tommy Angelo appear on top of a
boat in a pose similar to the movie poster of the "I'm flying" scene by Jack and
Rose in the 1997 movie "Titanic." I modded a screenshot from the game to mimic
the movie poster. The ReadMe file gives installation instructions and explains how you can
mod several other such things in the game that way.

  Sitting Duck Gangs

This is a mod to change gangs so they won't attack Claude and make it easier
for him to attack them.

GTA III Hidden Package and Rampage Finder

This is the "GTA III" version of illspirit's "Vice City Rampage/Package Finder
Mod AKA Aurora Borealis Over VC." It puts a vertical row of multi-colored
flashing balls of light over each Hidden Package and Rampage pickup.

Twelve ways to have Claude get to Staunton early

  - have Claude jump across the north side of the gap of the broken Callahan
Bridge. Have him jump from most of the way down the second segment of the bent
red girder to the silver pipe.

  - have Claude drive the Capital Autos Banshee onto the concrete above the
opening of the tunnel in northwest Portland and back up to the west edge. Use
the yellow divider lines of the road, and the line above that which represents a
crack in the concrete, to help you position the vehicle to be over the tunnel
that's underwater to the west below the cliff.

Have Claude back up further so the Banshee starts to topple from the cliff and
have him bail. Claude is temporarily non-solid so goes through the surface of
the water instead of it causing him to drown. He lands on top of the tunnel and
can run to a spot beneath Staunton or Shoreside, jump into the abyss, and be
teleported onto the ground above.

  - have Claude back an Ambulance along the southern sidewalk of the same tunnel
in northwest Portland to the blue wall that blocks the entrance to the tunnel.
Have him get on top of the Ambulance and the upper part of his body goes through
the ceiling, which is non-solid from below but not on top. Have him jump up on-
to the roof of that ceiling and go over the roof of the tunnel as in the method
above.

On PC, he may get stuck in the ceiling over the Ambulance--have him throw down
a Grenade and jump during the explosion to get unstuck and get onto the roof.
(You might give him invincibility for that with the Administrative Console so it
doesn't kill him.)

  - right click the game folder, click "Properties," un-check the "read only"
dot, click "Apply," click to "Apply changes to this folder, subfolder and
files," click "OK," and click "OK." Give a vehicle a -1 under column I,
"nPercentSubmerged," in data > handling.cfg.

Have Claude use that vehicle to drive off one side of the broken Callahan
Bridge or Staunton-Shoreside Vale lift bridge. The vehicle drops into Blue Hell
for a couple of moments then appears on the other side of the bridge.
  http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Blue_Hell

  - have Claude teleport (such as with the Administrative Console provided)

sole/index.htm

    (or with xbxy's "Traveler")
    http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=23222

  - have Claude use the Flight Assistance of the Administrative Console

  - use noclip (such as with the GTA 3 Mission Loader)
    http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=11249

  - use a vehicle spawner (such as with the GTA 3 Mission Loader) and spawn a
Predator
    http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=11249

  - use the chittychittybb code and have Claude fly a Police car across the gap
of the broken Callahan Bridge. You can add the CORNERSLIKEMAD code and press
Shift to make the vehicle do a Boost Jump to assist with this method and allow
you to use other vehicles.

  - install a mod (like "Max Pain's Modded GTA 3 v.2") that provides a bridge
between Portland and Staunton

  - install SilentPL's "III Aircraft"--a CLEO mod that gives "III" working air-
craft from VC that fly as good as in VC

"GRAND THEFT AUTO III: III Aircraft - Real, flyable helicopters and planes!
[HD]" by GTAGAME
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x_X8kEdeW0

  - if you've already had Claude get to Shoreside Vale and complete the vehicle
collection for the south Portland garage, have him get a Dodo from the garage.
(You could also use the Administrative Console to complete the Portland vehicle
collection quickly or use a vehicle spawner, such as with the GTA 3 Mission
Loader, and spawn a Dodo). Have him take off from a long walk along a coast of
Portland, such as the north coast, and fly to another island.

  Criminal ratings

  Pickpocket 0 - 9
  Bully 10 - 24
  Thug 25 - 69
  Hustler 70 - 149
  Goon 150 - 249
  Wheelman 250 - 449
  Hired Muscle 450 - 699
  Fixer 700 - 999
  Associate 1000 - 1399
  Cleaner 1400 - 1899
  Assassin 1900 - 2499
  Right-Hand Man 2500 - 3199
  Executioner 3200 - 3999
  Capo 4000 - 4999
  Boss 5000+

I'm not sure of the exact system, but I think having Claude, without letting
him get killed or busted, complete missions, kill (one point), or make money
then use a Pay 'n' Spray, or then saving the game, makes the rating go higher.
Using codes (at least GESUNDHEIT) doesn't make it lower in "III."
  http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=210537

An easy place to have Claude go on a rampage is his Portland save place since
you can use the gimmick of having him run to the back of his garage and back to
replenish all of his pickups. Have Claude, without letting him get killed or
busted, do the Sub-missions and get all the Hidden Packages to have all the
pickups there that he can have, then have him go on a rampage and blow up heli-
copters (Claude gets $250 per helicopter) with the Rocket Launcher, etc., and
the points will be added the next time you save the game or have him use a Pay
'n' Spray.

  Glitches. gimmicks, etc.

  Shoot the moon

As in VC or SA, you can have the lead character snipe the moon to change the
size of it. In "III," you can only pick from the default size and a smaller
size.

  Hookers for Health

Also as in VC or SA, you can let the lead character pick up a hooker (except
in the originally censored Australian version of "III"). In "III," there are
two hookers--a blonde Caucasian lady and an African-American lady. They're the
only two lady peds in the game that have their blouse parted a bit in the front.
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_III#Controversy

Have Claude let a hooker enter his vehicle. Unlike VC or SA, the lead charac-
ter's money starts to decrease as soon as she enters the vehicle. Have him park
on grass or a beach and the vehicle shakes while Claude's Health increases 25
points and his money decreases $123 further. You can use this to give him 125
Health.

  Infinite tramps

If you have Claude park the Bobcat in the middle of the four tramps with Molo-
tovs in the Portland tunnel from 8-Ball's place to the SupaSave!, and you have
Claude get on the roof of the Bobcat, the tramps disperse. Have him get on the
roof again, and four more tramps with Molotovs appear. Repeat as often as you
want.

  Preserving Claude's vehicle

Have Claude move away from his vehicle right after exiting so he doesn't close
the door if you want a better chance at having the vehicle stay in the game
though you have Claude leave the area temporarily.

  Disappearing multi-story parking garage vehicles

Have Claude get into one of the vans (something like the Esperanto isn't tall
enough) inside the multi-story parking garage in Newport, Staunton. (It's bas-
ically the same parking garage used for North Point Mall in "Vice City.")
ave him drive onto the jump ramp on the top level then get on the roof of the
vehicle. All the vehicles, including his own, in the parking garage disappear,
visually and physically, except for any with permanent spawn spots Claude left
on the ground floor.
  http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Newport_Multistory_Car_Park

My guess is that a developer decided that if you have Claude's vehicle do a
jump from the ramp you don't need to waste processing power on the vehicles that
don't have a permanent spawn spots in the garage.

  Driving a blown up car

Have Claude park a vehicle in front of another to stop it, go to the door of
the other vehicle, type the code to make all vehicles explode, BANGBANGBANG,
press F to have Claude enter the vehicle, quickly type the Health code,
GESUNDHEIT, before it explodes a second time, and Claude can drive a blown up
vehicle with three wheels. This is easier to do with the Administrative Console
since it's quicker to use hotkeys for codes than type the full words for codes.
If you have Claude use a Pay 'n' Spray, it replaces the fourth wheel but the car
is still black.

  The tree in a building

Use the Rocket Launcher gimmick to see through walls to look into the Staunton
building beside the Landstalker used for "A Ride in the Park" to see a tree in
the building.

To use the Rocket Launcher gimmick, have Claude stand with his right side
against the wall you want to see through, have him equip the Rocket Launcher,
bring up the scope, and keep up the scope while you have him turn toward the
wall. This gimmick works in "Vice City," too.

Scanin16 has you use the Taxi mission glitch described below to use a non-
submission vehicle for Taxi missions then pick up a fare on a street near the
north Portland car crusher. Have Claude park the driver door beside the car
crusher where the magnet is lowered. Keep the Look Behind key pressed while
you have Claude exit the car through the passenger who then exits, the magnet
lowers, you have Claude enter the car, then you release the Look Behind key.
The magnet drops the car and the Taxi mission is over. As long as Claude re-
mains in the vehicle you can have him can drive through otherwise solid things
in front of it but the vehicle gets larger and harder to drive till it falls
through blue hell, it returns to normal size, repeat, etc. Have Claude save
it in a garage and the vehicle becomes damage-proof.

Use the gimmick above for one of the easiest ways to see the interior of
Joey's garage--have Claude drive through a wall into the garage. If you have
Claude exit the vehicle he can't get back into it. There's a non-solid wall
in back so you can have Claude go through it and fall through blue hell to get
outside.
"GTA 3 How to get to Joey's garage?" by TheAgniesia22

You could also use it for a way to get Claude into Mr. Wong's Laundromat,
Chinatown.

  Floating Ghost Car

Vadim M adds that if you have Claude drive it through the side of the crush-
er it may get stuck. If so hold Forward or Backward and press F1 and it may
float into the air.

The original method used to see the interior of Joey's Garage

Make an acute corner between the west front garage door or wall of the ga-
rage and a heavy vehicle. Use the fast gameplay cheat twice and have Claude
run into the corner esp. the wall. One he's inside use the slow down gameplay
code twice. Option: on PC use whatever software that allows you to use noclip.

Vadim M
Have Claude activate "Toyminator"--the second phone booth mission from D-Ice.
Have him drive to the red marker at the Toyz van. Hold down "Look behind"
(Mouse 3--the buttom on the middle of your mouse wheel) and Horn (Shift) then
keep pressing Enter (F). Claude exits his vehicle and a cutscene begins to
show how to use a nearby RC car to destroy (LMB) cars but the the mission is
failed. When the cutscene is over the RC car remains--you can now control it.
You can't enter the van.
  Explode--Fire or hit a vehicle
  Forward--Jump
  Left/Right--Left/Right
  Backward--Sprint
If you have Claude enter another car the RC Bandit controls and the car con-
trols will be the same and you can't have him exit the car.

Off the beaten path locations and interiors
(see my ReadMe file in the "AdministrativeConsoleFiles" folder)

To satisfy your curiosity about most of the locations of this category more
quickly than usual, go to my "AdministrativeConsoleFiles" folder. The ReadMeBy-
GTW file gives the links to Alper Saracoglu's Administrative Console. Download
and install it then Copy and Paste the two files I've supplied, GTA3Console and
GTA3Locations, into the Program Files > GTA3Console folder.

This doesn't change anything about the console except to add teleport loca-
tions and hotkeys for most of the off the beaten path locations and interiors
(plus the locations of the pickups for all the Off-Road missions, etc.).

The ReadMeByGTW file also describes the ways to send Claude to those locations
without a teleporter.

  Parking meters

On the north side of the east-west street that's east of the middle of the
east side of the most southwest block of Staunton are parking meters that can be
knocked over. They don't leave money when knocked over like the ones on the
south side of the long east-west stretch of road just east of the Hyman Condo
alley in "Vice City."

  Minor 3D interior sites

CLoWnnSkuLL noticed that the entrance to Kenji's Casino is a 3D lobby. On the
southwest corner of the block to the west of it is a 3D lobby that's mainly en-
closed by glass and contains a bench.

Changes in "III" due to 9/11

See the Wikipedia article at the next link.
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_III#Cuts.2C_changes.2C_and_the_9.2F11_effect
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11_attacks

According to Sam Houser on Sept. 19, 2001, "So far we have come across certain
small contextual references that we were no longer comfortable with, as well as
a couple of very rare game play instances that no longer felt appropriate to us.
We apologize to you and all the people waiting for this game to ship for the de-
lays that have now ensued, but I'm sure you can understand our reasoning."

Police cars and the Enforcer were changed from a pre-2000 NYPD blue and white
to a more generic black and white.

Darkel, still listed in the credits with voice actor Bill Fiore, was removed.
Darkel was a revolutionary who wanted to bring down the economy and was to have
provided Rampage-like missions. Rockstar decided to use their earlier system of
providing Rampages instead. A mission provided by Darkel to have Claude attract
peds to an ice cream truck then blow it up was changed to be a mission provided
by El Burro to have Claude blow up an ice cream truck kill four Mafiosi.

"Mona" at the end of Right Guard commercials.

files in the game.

section about Portland and click "harbor tunnel" to see Darkel and the four
homeless men associated with the abandoned railroad tunnel. The four homeless
men stand with Molotov Cocktails around a Hidden Package in the final version of
the game.

Other changes included removing the ability to play as certain characters
(such as the Taxi driver with an accent and a turban) from the ILIKEDRESSINGUP
code, removing the ability to blow limbs from non-player characters in the PS2
version of "GTA III" (though this can enabled with a code), and removing elderly
peds with walkers, school children as peds (from GameSpot UK's preview and the
Gouranga fansite), and a yellow school bus (seen in eight screenshots). A
junked version of the yellow school bus can be found in the lot of 8-Ball's Bomb
Shop and the lot to the east of it.

The Dodo you can fly already had a short wingspan for months before 9/11 as
evidenced from a preview in Game Informer (Issue #95) which indicated that the
plane was to be used in a (now abandoned) mission to fly it high enough to
reach new areas of the city.

  "GTA 3 - Mission 59 - Love's Disappearance (HD)" by SniperTech07
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MPFxdN3_BE

I didn't find a connection between Donald Love's abrupt disappearance and
9/11. Nothing in the game files, subsequent GTAs, or official releases from
Rockstar explains it. The persistent rumor that Darkel was to have Claude fly
the Dodo to blow up against Love's building seems unlikely since Claude would
either die or parachute from the Dodo before impact, and Rockstar didn't imple-
ment parachuting for a lead character till "San Andreas."

The most toward that I can imagine as a theory that's based on what we know is
that Claude got missions at the RR tunnel from Darkel, who led a gang of male
and female homeless people. (In data > pedgrp.dat, they're scum_man and
scum_wom. According to the .txd files, The female counterpart to the male home-
less guy is the overweight lady with shabby clothes and a crumpled hat.) The
gang carried Molotov Cocktails (and ?).

Darkel, who wanted to bring down the economy, sent Claude to kill Donald Love,
the one whom the game, such as Chatterbox FM. emphasizes the most as being a
traditional capitalist. Claude had to fly the Dodo somewhere he hadn't been be-
fore: Donald Love's penthouse. (The Dodo would have a higher flight ceiling.)
Claude's vehicles protect him like Armor, so he could wreck there and get out
unharmed. But he wouldn't find Donald Love. We'd have the cutscene we have
now--he'd check the little box for something for Darkel and leave. Again,
that's just an imaginable theory.

  Stunts

A couple of locations that are similar to the VC Prawn Island fountain--a ramp
with a tall object behind it:

  - have Claude drive east on the road to Asuka's apartment building to the
sloped edge of the curb of the parking lot. If you have him veer a bit to the
right, his vehicle can hit a pole that won't break.

  - a block west of Kenji's Casino in Staunton is a north-south road that has
road dividers with grass and trees on top and sloped edges at either end. Have
Claude's car go up a slope and hit a tree.

The Chinatown El-Train bend jump is demonstrated at the next link:

"gta 3 car vs train" by steel2612
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJr5tJx4LQg

Have Claude drive a small fast car up the Portland View El-Train station, onto
the El-Train track, and drive to the right on the right track (to avoid the
train) to Chinatown. At the curve at the bottom of the slope, have him get on
the left track and park at an angle so the train can hit the car from behind and
so, once hit, the car goes toward the stretch of road ahead. You'll probably
need to pause (Esc) the game right after the car is hit and type GESUNDHEIT to
keep the car from blowing up. What you get is more of a wreck than a super
jump.

easiest to do) onto the steps of the Coliseum and jump up onto the ledge.

  "Forever" by glenster
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dC119wBK0I

This is a video of a modded "GTA III." The handling.cfg figures for the super
Rumpo and YoYo's 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air, which I used to replace the Idaho, are
from "Glenster's GTA III Starter Package." Most scenes feature the "GTAIII XBox
Version" mod by rmws, a few scenes feature "Max Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0" by Max
Pain aka Nemo, and one scene features my "Mafia Titanic Posters and Billboards"
mod.

Joey gives Claude the mission to rescue Maria. Claude does stunts with the
super Rumpo and the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air on the way. Claude and Maria stay to-
gether and he celebrates with stunts in the li'l Dodo, the super Rumpo, the '57
Chevy, and one stunt with the Borgnine taxi.

The songs are "Forever" (Stuart Ross), a segment of "Waltz of the Flowers"
(Tchaikovsky), and "End" (Craig Conner).

I see a little percentage work very hard to come up with some snazzy stunts,
and I enjoy them like a lot of people and I'm happy to recommend them. But I
see a big percentage making Lets's Plays for Mafias and GTAs that can't seem to
drive down the road without doing a header with something and blaming the car.
It's like their favorite thing about VC was North Point Mall except they'd like
to be able to buy socks there.

I think Rockstar sees this and drops the ball regarding things that made VC
fun to stunt with and orients it more toward letting people fly slowly along on
Jetpacks and Parachutes, in cars that are spongy like Nerf cars--if you run into
another you can drive over or under it--in a setting so big it stretches the
ability of the graphics engine, and buy a lot of clothes--something more like
The Sims.

So if there's a little message in what I do in all my videos, it isn't that
I'm a hot shot gamer or stunter. It's to encourage the majority that you don't
have to be in the hall of fame to enjoy playing baseball. You don't have to do
a double bump and land on something three inches wide then do a grind to the top
of a cop car and do an airgrab and land in a boat, then edit it with something
that costs 800 dollars, or else not do it at all. You can crank up the tunes
and at least have fun with the basics all over town, and tape and edit it for
free.

(PS: if you're wondering why all my walkthroughs have a '57 Chevy, although
it's not the latest and greatest in cars, at the top of the web page, it's be-
cause it was my Dad's car when I was little--I was born in '56.)

  How to fly the Dodo

Have the Dodo on the long runway at the airport with the mid-distance view
from behind. Accelerate forward and after a few seconds add NP6 (Dodo nose
down). When sparks appear by the nose (you might use a side view temporarily to
see the sparks better), release NP6. It gains altitude then becomes level.

Tap NP6 when the red nose rises into view more than a sliver to keep the plane
approximately level.

The longer it flies the more altitude it gains. Once it gains enough alti-
tude, you don't have to hold down W, the acceleration key. It dips occasional-
ly then rises again during normal flight. If it dips more or faster than that,
indicating it's going out of control, level the plane. If it happens while the
plane is tilted to one side, counteracting the tilt with a tap to A or D can
bring it out of it.

Tap, don't hold, A or D to make slow gradual turns and correct oversteer right
away.

Try to avoid flying over Unique Stunt Jumps. The developers didn't coordinate
the size of the areas that trigger the slow motion effect with the areas the
Dodo flies in. The areas that trigger the slow motion effect rise high from
their jump spots and the Dodo can pass through them. When that happens, I think
you'll probably have the Dodo crash before the slow motion effect ends.

According to stef_92, the Unique Stunt Jumps that don't create this problem
for flying the Dodo are the Staunton jump through the window, the Staunton jump
in the boatyard, the jump in Chinatown onto the El-Train track, and the Portland
jump over the El-Train track.
  http://gtaforums.com/topic/276003-the-observatory/page-2

To land it, fly it over the long runway at the airport, level the Dodo, re-
lease acceleration, press NP9 (Dodo nose up) to bring the Dodo to a 45 degree
angle, and it descends. Tap NP9 as needed to keep the plane at a 45 degree an-
gle.

You can change the data folder so it isn't "read only" then give the Dodo a -1
in column I for percent submerged in data > handling.cfg so Claude won't drown
if it falls into water.

See my "AdministrativeConsoleFiles" folder if you want to add the west end of
the main runway at the airport as a teleport location to make it easy to retry
flights.

Cobra8811 shows you can use a normal landing method for the Dodo if you have
enough runway. Having the Dodo hit the edge of the game world can give the
Dodo a little altitude boost. The full wing Dodo mod flies the same as the un-
modded Dodo.
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVT1oPkFQHg

If you have Claude use the Rocket Launcher to destroy the full wing Dodo that
flies over the town, he gets a four star wanted rating.

  How to fly the Rhino

Have Claude drive the Rhino to a place with a long unobstructed runway--the
main runway at the airport is the best--and enter the CHITTYCHITTYBB code. Use
NP4 and NP5 to turn the turret straight backwards and shoot it repeatedly with
the LMB or NP0 while driving forward. Once it gets off the ground, release ac-
celeration but keep shooting. Claude can then fly the Rhino around Liberty
City.

Avoid sharp turns with the Rhino or it will dip or even twirl to the ground.
Unlike the Dodo, it doesn't have a height limit. Once you have a good altitude,
you can stop shooting. Occasionally let it level itself from a dip or tilt--it
may wreck if you try to control that too much.

You can try different views with C and watch instant replays with F1.

I suppose the problem of flying the Dodo through the areas that trigger the
slow motion effect for Unique Stunt Jumps is a problem to avoid while flying the
Rhino, too.

You can give the Rhino a -1 for column I, percent submerged, in data > han-
dling.cfg so Claude won't drown if it lands in water. You can turn the turret
forward and shoot to slow down the Rhino for landing.

See my "AdministrativeConsoleFiles" folder if you want to add the west end of
the main runway at the airport as a teleport location to make it easy to retry
flights.

How to have Claude go through walls

Have Claude park a heavy vehicle to create a small angle with a wall. Use the
TIMEFLIESWHENYOU code twice to make gameplay very fast, then have Claude run at
the wall, in the space created by the vehicle and the wall, to send Claude
through the wall (such as a wall at the side of Joey's garage to send Claude in-
to the garage). It's easier to use the noclip function of Cowpat's "Mission
Loader."

To return gameplay speed to normal, use the BOOOOORING code.

  PC codes

You can type the code during the game to enter it or pause the game with Esc
to type a code or codes which will take effect when you resume the game. The
latter method is handy for various things, such as pausing the game to type the
Health code before Claude's vehicle blows up. The Administrative Console fea-
tures hotkeys for codes.

GESUNDHEIT This gives Claude 100 Health and gives full Health to any ve-
hicle he's in when the code is entered.
  TURTOISE (v1.0)
TORTOISE (v1.1) This gives Claude 100 Armor.

GUNSGUNSGUNS This gives Claude every weapon of those he can carry and a
little ammo. Every subsequent time the code is entered,
                     Claude gets more ammo.
  IFIWEREARICHMAN This gives Claude $250,000.

  SKINCANCERFORME scattered clouds
ILIKESCOTLAND overcast with some fog in the distance
  ILOVESCOTLAND thunderstorm
  PEASOUP foggy
MADWEATHER This causes faster time and faster changes in the weather and
day/night cycle. Type it again to cancel it.

ILIKEDRESSINGUP Each time it's typed the lead character changes into one of
the peds. It's faster to use the hotkeys of the Adminis-
trative Console to search for a particular ped.
WEAPONSFORALL Peds carry weapons and they or a nearby ped use them on the
attacker of a ped. Type it again to cancel it.
NOBODYLIKESME Peds try to kill Claude and jack him from his vehicle. To
cancel it, load an earlier save, start a new game, or exit
the game. Don't save the game while the code is in effect
or it will be a permanent feature of that save game.
ITSALLGOINGMAAAD Peds attack each other and Claude and jack vehicles. To
cancel it, load an earlier save, start a new game, or exit
the game. Don't save the game while the code is in effect
or it will be a permanent feature of that save game.

NASTYLIMBCHEAT I'm guessing it causes nastier limb/head removal for cen-
sored games. In my American v1.0, the message "Cheat ac-
tivated" didn't appear and I didn't notice a difference in
how peds bodies reacted to being killed by shots or explo-
                      sions.
MOREPOLICEPLEASE This increases Claude's wanted level by two stars each time
it's typed until the maximum possible for that time in the
game is reached. The wanted level can be reduced in any
of the usual ways (including having Claude ride the El-
Train or complete a Rampage) or with the NOPOLICEPLEASE
                      code.
NOPOLICEPLEASE This reduces Claude's wanted level to zero

CHITTYCHITTYBB This enables Claude's land vehicle to fly a bit if he goes
fast enough. It works better with fast vehicles. The
fastest vehicle is the Rhino if the speed is increased by
shooting the turret backward. See the section above on
flying the Rhino. Type the code again to cancel it.
BANGBANGBANG This blows up all the vehicles spawned in Claude's area.
  GIVEUSATANK This spawns a Rhino.
ANICESETOFWHEELS This causes only the wheels and, if lit, headlights, tail
lights, and emergency vehicle lights of a land vehicle to
be visible. Boats are invisible except for the revolving
radar on the top of a Reefer or Predator. Only the wheels
of the Dodo are visible. The shadow, gunfire, exhaust,
and exploded parts from a vehicle, and flying vehicles
Claude can't fly remain visible. Type it again to cancel

CORNERSLIKEMAD This creates unrealistically strong turning and braking
traction for all land vehicles and the braking traction of

                      Boost Jump.

TIMEFLIESWHENYOU This causes faster gameplay, time, etc., and can be entered
twice. To cancel each use of it, use the BOOOOORING code
that many times or cancel all uses of it by getting the
slow motion reaction to a Unique Stunt Jump.
BOOOOORING This slows down normal gameplay, and each use of this can-
cels each use of the TIMEFLIESWHENYOU code.

  Skins for Claude

You can download skins for Claude from many GTA web sites. Put them in the
skins folder of your main game folder. When you run the game, go to Options >
Player Setup and you can pick the appearance you want for Claude.

  How to make a skin

Go to the "skins" folder in your main game folder and Copy "playa2.bmp," Paste
it somewhere else, and Rename it "playa3.bmp." Use a different number for the
file name of each skin you want to create. Open "playa3.bmp" with a graphics
editor such as Microsoft Paint, Irfanview, Adobe Photo Shop, etc. Color it the
way you want.

According to the gta.wikia site, "All skins created by the user have to be a
24-bit Bitmap (bmp) file, and have to be 256 by 256 in size."
  http://gta.wikia.com/wiki/Skins

Copy the result into the "skins" folder. Start the game, go to Options >
Player Setup, and choose the appearance you want for Claude.

How to put Darkel back into "GTA III"

You can put Darkel into "III" with Notepad. Right click the game folder,
click "Properties," un-check the "read only" dot, click "Apply," click to "Apply
changes to this folder, subfolder and files," click "OK," and click "OK." Use
Notepad to open data\default.ide, click "Edit" > "Replace," and replace
"scum_man" with "darkel." Do the same with data\pedgrp.dat.

(If you rename Darkel's .txd and .dff files to replace those for scum man you
end up with a white Darkel ghost unless you delete txd.dir. If you're using the
"GTAIII XBox Version" mod by rmws, you can replace the .dff file in gta3.img and
the .txd file in txd.img--don't delete txd.dir. That's how I replaced "prosti-
tute" with "Maria" when I wanted to make a video of Maria in Claude's car.)

(But with either version of the game, you can leave the files alone and just
use Notepad to change which .dff and .txd files the game calls for to have
"scum man" appear.)

You might try using Darkel as your lead character a bit with the IFEELLIKE-
DRESSINGUP code.

  Mods

I recommend downloading and saving some other "GTA III" mods. I use a folder
to save mods, walk-throughs, etc. for each of my games on a storage drive so
I'll have them even after some may disappear from the Internet.
  http://www.thegtaplace.com/downloads/c21/
  http://www.gtainside.com/en/gta3mods
  http://www.gtagarage.com/mods/browse.php?Game=3

After adding a mod to "GTA III" with .txd and .dff files, delete models >
txd.dir. (Don't do that if you use the "GTAIII XBOX Version" mod by rmws.) The
next time you load a game, you'll get the message "Converting textures to opti-
mal format for your video card." If your car mod has white spots instead of the
proper colors, you left out that step.

Alper Saracoglu's GTA III "Administrative Console"

It has the usual cheats, it lets you set Claude's Health and Armor (invinci-
bility), it has a teleporter with the ability to save locations and set hotkeys
for them, the ability to give Claude the three rewards for the Ambulance mis-
sion quickly, the ability to make Claude's vehicle fly (it's turned on and off
with the 1 and 2 keys; the x axis is forward/backward and the z axis is up/
down), ability to set and freeze mission time, ability to make Claude's vehicle
EP/DP/BP/FP and save such vehicles in his garages, a garage editor, etc.

It's the only tool I found for "GTA III" that features noclip. (Press G to
turn off Claude's gravity then use Z and X to send Claude forward or backward
and steer him with the mouse. Press G to have gravity return to normal for
him.) It also features slow motion time, the ability to restore Claude's
Health, and a vehicle spawner.

Cowpat has also created versions of his tool for "Vice city" and "San An-

"Max Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0" by Max Pain

Max Pain's collection of mods includes dozens of different vehicles (including
YoYo's "Chevrolet Bel Air '57"), buildings (including Odie's "Miss Liberty" and
marki's "World Trade Center"), stunt ramps, Portland-Staunton-Shoreside bridges,
Homer Simpson's "Bridge to Ghost Town," the Rhino is illspirit's "Sarin MMX2,"
the Dodo is Mabefge's "USAF F-16," better car reflections, Sveni's "Naktpatch,"
a sunken ship north of Portland, some palm trees, new water and moon textures, a
gang respect mod by ?, "GPS Color Radar v2.0" by ?, etc. Your old save games
and Alper Saracoglu's "Administrative Console" work with it.

It comes with an installer and is available at the next link.

"Real GTA III" by Petr Doupal and the RealGTA3 team

This has many similarities to "Max Pain's MODDED GTA3 v2.0." It replaces the
vehicles, mostly with sports cars, has Otie's "Miss Liberty," etc. On one hand,
MrMilti's Shoreside Bridge is functioning, but on the other there's no 1957
Chevrolet Bel Air.

  "GTAIII XBOX Version" by rmws

It features fully converted Xbox vehicles, boats and planes, high definition
actor and pedestrian models with Xbox body parts, improved game graphics and ef-
fects, remakes of of Xbox version buildings and objects, high quality city tex-
tures, high polygon Xbox vegetation with textures including Long Distance (LOD)
models, a remade console version menu, the original Xbox "Logo" and "Intro" mov-
ies, high quality Xbox loadscreens, 3D car wheels with textures, new HD textures
that weren't in the Xbox version, new collision data for Ghost Town, Kenji's
Casino, and Portland hospital, and texture and model bug fixes (fixing most bugs
and glitches left by game developers).

  http://gtaforums.com/topic/399016-iii-xbox-version/

Besides rmws, the modding team includes XAF226, pearcyp, SLAYERMAGGOT, Secre-
tagents1, eminemd12, Fireburns, Ghost Bear, ms.cooldude, and 1TUFSS.

To install it, make a fresh installation of "GTA III," patch it to v1.1, play
it a bit, exit, delete gta3.set from the My Documents > GTA3 User Files folder,
then run the installer for the mod. If you have an older PC with an AGP card,
delete d3d8.dll, d3d9.dll, enbconvertor.ini, and enbseries.ini from the main
game folder.

Then play the game. Alpert Saracoglu's Administrative Console works with it:
click the Keyboard Shortcuts tab and make sure the drop down box in the lower
right corner is set to v1.1.

Thanks to rmws for such a nice graphics improvement mod and answering some
questions I had about it:

To replace a vehicle with a mod, use the IMG Tool 2.0 to replace the .dff file
in gta3.img and rebuild the archive, then replace the .txd file in txd.img and
rebuild the archive.

You can mod the data files (handling.cfg, timecyc.dat, pedstats.dat) but
leave particle.cfg alone if you want the Xbox-looking effects on the PC version.

The link for audio on p.1 of the GTA Forums message board for the mod leads
to a site that wants you to become a paying Premium member to download a whole
folder (wav, over a GB, or mp3/wav). Download all wavs individually to avoid
that. The audio includes "O Mio Babbino Caro," an opera song from the XBox
version not included in the PC version, as part of the CLASS.wav (Double Cleff
FM).
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ax-MyEQWbQ

Copy the audio files into the audio folder. You need a No-CD crack to launch
wavs from the audio folder. Check the forum if you have any questions.

You might try "GTAIII XBOX Version" with my draw distance mod.

(Besides using mods, you can add vehicles like the BF Injection or Borgnine
Taxi to street traffic by changing the data folder so it isn't "read only," us-
ing Notepad to open default.ide, and changing the class of some of the land ve-
hicles, or even the Dodo, from "ignore" to one of the other choices in the cate-
gory. How often it appears is determined by Frequency, which can be 1 to 20
with 20 being frequent, such as for the Taxi.)

jack one or the game will freeze.)

"Chopper" aka "Diablos Chopper Motorcycle" by Skizot Enigma, Persanity, and
    PGJ

It may flip instead of turn for a sharp turn because GTA "III" doesn't have
appropriate motorcycle turning animation, so give it a 0.00 for column Y in
handling.cfg. I'd also recommend using it to replace a vehicle with a spawn
spot since the game sometimes froze when I had Claude jack one in "Max Pain's

  "Taxi Driver player" by gtadude1
This mod lets you replace Claude with a realistic-looking model of Travis
Bickle as played by Robert De Niro in the 1976 Martin Scorsese movie "Taxi
Driver." Wash the scum off the streets.

with its own wheels but appears with the wheels of the "GTA III" vehicle it
replaces you didn't use "DMagic1 Wheel Mod 3.0."

"GTA III Beta Mod!! Must see.." by Dinglemaniac
I don't think this mod has been finished and made available anywhere, but you
can get some of the separate novelties of it, like blue and white police cars,
at mod sites--see the GTA Garage offerings at the links below. The lot for 8-
Ball's Bomb Shop, and the lot to the east of it, contain junked versions of the
yellow school bus that was removed from the final version of the game. You
could give the Bus in the game a yellow color in data > carcols.dat to see some-
thing similar. School Bus yellow is R 255, G 216, B 0.

The Liberty City mod for "Vice City"

It puts the setting, lead character, vehicles, and missions of "Grand Theft
Auto III" on the engine of "Vice City." This creates an improved frame rate and
handling of vehicles, and it has better lighting and reflections. It adds the
"Vice City" skies and clouds, translucent water with aquatic life, motorcycles,
helicopters, and Skimmer. You can do the Vigilante mission with the Hunter and
the Dodo is easier to fly.
  http://gtaforums.com/forum/333-gta-liberty-city/

To use a trainer with it, un-check the green dot (I.100.D.a), go to the Liber-
ty City folder, open gta-lc.ini with Notepad, and change:

  ChangeTaskBar=1

  to

  ChangeTaskBar=0

  Save and exit.

It's the "Vice City" engine so "Vice City" trainers work with it.

If you want to put car mods into it, use the "Vice City" modding rules. It
already has DMagic1's Wheel Mod.

It's basically like having an extra edition of "Vice City" that takes place
in NYC and gives you more missions, or like "III" was released after "Vice City"
instead of the other way around.
