gamestm_59.jpgUK magazine Games™ has the world's first hands on preview of GTA IV's new gameplay. There are many new screenshots in the article, as well as a fair amount of new information.

  • Times Square is called "Star Junction"
  • Few people were on the streets in the demo that Games™ played (this could be attributed to early code)
  • Niko can use his cell phone to call for weapons - Games™ say that Niko calls his associate Little Jacob, a Caribbean arms dealer, the conversation ends with Jacob telling Niko to meet him in an alleyway in Rotterdam Hill
  • The player can call a taxi cab to go to a destination and view the ride in first-person or use trip-skip to speed the experience along
  • On one mission, Niko must retrieve a memory stick with sensitive data on it from a person identified as McReary. The problem is that McReary is standing with a group of people and Niko doesn't know who he is, so he takes out his cell phone and calls McReary. When the now-revealed target pulls out his cell phone, Niko walks up and puts a bullet in his head.
  • Missions can supposedly be "interrupted." This suggests that multiple missions can be done at the same time and that some will span several days
  • Niko received a call in the demo, which concerned a "shady lawyer" by the name of Goldberg, of Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster. On this mission, Niko must upload his resume to Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster's website, get an interview, and kill Goldberg. In this mission, Niko purchased a 00 suit from a clothing store called "Perseus," then ventured to the law firm and talked to the secretary over the intercom, before being let in. Niko then went to see Goldberg and promptly killed him. This caused the secretary to trigger the alarm and Niko to receive a 3-star wanted level.
  • The "TW@" internet café from GTA3 is present but this time you can surf the web (which is "huge" and "very important," according to Rockstar)
  • Any crime committed will give you a wanted level
  • The star rating will create a visible search area on the radar, which, if escaped, will dissipate the wanted level
  • The police radio returns and you can hear the police talking about where you were last spotted as in previous games, only this time, the police will know exactly where you are at because every street is named
  • There is a clothing store called "Perseus" where suits can be purchased
  • The draw distance is "unreal"

This is certainly exciting, as never before have players been able to "surf the web" in a GTA game. The police also seem to be much more vigilant and realistic in the game, as in the missions Games™ played, killing a single person warranted a 3-star wanted level on both occasions.

Thanks, killyourtv for the scans.

I thought they'd never place a Internet Cafe in one of Rockstars games, I guess it must be exciting. Lol, Goldberg sounds more of a wrestlers name than a Lawyers name would.

Goldberg sounds like an idiot, but I like the idea of accessing the internet and also the arsm dealer 'Little Jacob', this games seems to be getting better and better and I haven't even played it

Any crime committed will give you a wanted level

Does this mean any crimes? Like speeding and stuff?

Ciaran's photo
Ciaran 9th July, 2007 @ 16:47 - Permalink

Any crime? Does this mean in view of a cop or just if you do a crime you'll get a wanted star? This could be a little disappointing as I would always just steal a car. But I love the way you can "surf the net".

Red_91's photo
Red_91 9th July, 2007 @ 17:38 - Permalink

Getting a wanted level for any crime will totally ruin the game because stealing cars and killing people in previous GTAs didn't warrant a star but I guess this may be the new look GTA

Uh, every time I start a game of VC and get in a car (not even hijacking it, just that car before the main save house) I get a one star wanted level.

And Rotterdam Hills, wouldn't be surprised if that's close to a harbor, since in Holland Rotterdam is our biggest harbor.. But might be something else in NY though..

Good info anyway, busy reading the scans ATM.

IMO the wanted level changes will really make the game more exciting and challenging. And surfing the web sounds sexy.

Yeah I think so too. I hope R* put in a little easter egg where accessing certain 'websites' on the 'GTA Web' will actually be like a screenshot or something of some of the fan sites, well just the really big ones anyway, that'd be awesome.

Could possibly replace all those words that have got to do with 'it' with IV or something. Or just a redirect to R* site would be funny too.

Cool, imagine viewing # while playing GTA IV, that would be awesome :o

Or could really search the net with a connection o.o

And about the stricter laws, does this mean no blasting through NYC at 100mph? ):

this has the most info out of all of them. i like the little area search on the radar. reminds me of hitman (just with a radar.) it should only give you a wanted level if somebody sees you do it. then calls police. like hitman, and if you kill them before they call, you still dont get a wanted level. but they also might be able to trace you, then a box shows up "Cops have confirmed that you are the killer of a victim, they are after you!" sortof like a way more advanced reminder of "going down" in gta 2.

Lawls, that's cause Goldberg was a wrestler...

Hah, you want some credibility there eh Chris? ;)

But yeah surfing the web does sound sexy chris82, can't wait to try it out. I like the huge use of the cellphones in this one. And about the 3 star wanted level for killing someone I doubt it will happen outside of missions. I think this one may have been an exception because his secretary pulled the alarm and stuff. But who knows.

every crime will give you a wanted level?

does this include traffic crimes?

and does it mean it'll raise your wanted level even if no one sees you?

tilly's photo
tilly 10th July, 2007 @ 06:43 - Permalink

depends on what LC crimes are.

Red_91's photo
Red_91 10th July, 2007 @ 14:43 - Permalink

If your not seen then you wont get a wanted level, this should happen anyway in my opinion.

Pandora's photo
Pandora 10th July, 2007 @ 14:50 - Permalink

Would make it more realistic. Like if you'd kill someone in the middle of no where in San Andreas you'd still get a Wanted Level. So in GTA IV it would be better that if you'd kill some guy in a deserted alley way you won't get a wanted level but you'll see cops searching if you didn't use a silencer on your gun.

Red_91's photo
Red_91 10th July, 2007 @ 16:53 - Permalink

Seriosuly I dont remember at all when you killed people in the middle of nowhere in San Andreas you DIDN'T get a wanted level, if its not seen you dont get a wanted level in San Andreas. This will continue probably into GTAIV

Pandora's photo
Pandora 10th July, 2007 @ 17:22 - Permalink

You did...

If you'd kill more then 2, even if it's somewhere in the country side where no cops are, you'd get a wanted level.

Red_91's photo
Red_91 10th July, 2007 @ 17:25 - Permalink

More than 2? You didn't say that, you just said if you'd kill someone meaning only 1 person. ^_^
