The chill of the night air was driven into Assassin’s bones as the wind blew gently through the night. Debris and litter danced down the dark street before him as he walked aimlessly around the city, pondering his future. Discharged from both the Marines and the Special Forces, he had no job and only his final pay, including accumulated vacation for money.
He’d returned to Vice City a few days back, to find his house totally trashed. Spray bombed many times, windows smashed throughout and water damage from attic to cellar, the shell was fit for animals, but barely. When he’d gone to the bank, the manager had explained that a robbery had left the bank with zero funds on hand and little hope of the customers funds being covered, due to an insurance error.
So having only the clothes on his back and a fistful of rapidly dwindling cash, Assassin had reached an all time low in his life. He’d brought his gun, the military issue 9 mm pistol, but refused to sell such a fine weapon, for now. Assassin slipped into an abandoned building and settled in for a few hours sleep. His appointment with the bank was in the morning and they would see what was going to happen about the $120 000 he’d lost in the robbery.
The meeting at the bank went poorly. The bank was closing out due to the robbery and they’d given him $1000 cash as reparation for his losses, all that they could afford. He’d taken it and stormed out, rage forcing a haze across his vision.
On the sidewalk, a quartet of Cubans surrounded him, eyeing the cash he clenched in his left hand. One stepped forward, demanding the money and Assassin struck with speed that would rival a cat. The 9mm came to bear and barked 3 shots before the Cubans could react, dropping a pair. Assassin pulled the nearest survivor in front of him as he spun, catching the 3 shots his comrade fired in return. The human shield bucked and jumped as Assassin returned fire, a single shot to the man’s forehead, leaving a 3rd eye, perfectly spaced between the original 2.
That afternoon, a man by the name of Tommy Vercetti approached Assassin with an offer. Tommy had seen his work on the street and was pleased. He offered Assassin a chance to make a lot of money and earn a lot of respect in the city. Vercetti was THE crime lord in VC at the time and the offer sounded good. Assassin accepted and the deal was done. The former Marine and Special Forces officer was now a criminal.
Over the next 2 years, Assassin worked for Vercetti, filing away in his mind all the contacts and deals Vercetti made. Assassin got to know Vercetti’s dealings and previous jobs and with that knowledge came a new drive for the former Marine. Determination and hard work were rewarded one afternoon when Vercetti picked up Assassin and took him to meet a high ranking crime lord from out of town named Mr. Leone.
When they got out of the car and were introduced, Assassin’s judge of character picked up something from Leone. The man didn’t like Vercetti much, but tolerated him. Assassin felt a link between himself and the crime lord as they talked for a short time and the pair shook hands firmly as Leone went to his car and headed for the airport.
Assassin turned to face Tommy as Leone’s car pulled away.
“I’d like to thank you,” he said slowly, stopping a few paces from Tommy.
Vercetti’s face screwed into confusion for a moment and he tilted his head. “For giving you work?” he asked.
“For making me what I am today,” Assassin replied, crossing his arms. “A Made Man. I handle myself on the streets, I have contacts and income sources. I have a reputation here, cars, women, booze, drugs, I have it all. And really, I owe it all to you.”
Vercetti’s cocky smile grew as Assassin talked. Of course the kid was grateful; he’d worked under the best. A look of confusion painted itself across Tommy’s features once more as he pondered the words. Why now?
“See, if you hadn’t robbed that bank in Little Havana a couple of years ago, my life would likely have been a lot different,” Assassin said, noting Tommy’s confusion. “That bank held everything I had at the time. They folded because of your work and I lost it all. But, thanks to you, I not only got it all back, but I saw how it was done. Now all I need to do is pay you back for all your help.”
As Vercetti’s face twisted through confusion, understanding and anger, Assassin’s remained impassive. His hands, however were in full motion, drawing the familiar 9mm pistol from the shoulder rig, bringing it to bear and squeezing off a single shot, all before Vercetti could even clear leather.
Assassin left the body to cool on the sidewalk and got into Vercetti’s car, heading for the airport. The drive took only a few minutes and when he got there, Leone stood by his car, 1 man beside him.
As Assassin got out, Leone’s smile widened.
“Tommy couldn’t make it,” he said smoothly, winking at as he approached. “Too bad…..for him anyway. This is Genocide.” As the introductions were made, Leone nodded to the man. “He's a good man looking for a leader to operate under. Since Tommy ain’t here, I’d say you are that man.”
Assassin nodded him, measuring the man. He held himself with confidence and he carried a deadly aura. This man would be the base of his crew. With him at his side, Assassin would reach to what Tommy Vercetti had worked for and beyond.
As the man got into Assassin’s car, Leone called to him. “I’ll look you up again when I’m in town, see how things are going,” he said.
“Yeah,” replied Assassin, opening the drivers door. “Ask for the Republic. The Assault Rifle Republic, people will know who we are.”
As they pulled away, Genocide leaned over the seat to talk to Assassin. “I know a guy around town here that would likely fit in pretty well. He’s tied in with the Mafia, and has worked his way up to a position of great importance. His name’s Slavik, I can give him a call if you want.”
Assassin handed his cell phone to Genocide in the back seat. “Do that,” he said. “We have some allies, then we’re going to shake this city up and make sure folks know who we are.”
That afternoon, the Republic was born. It’s grown since, to become a well respected and perhaps more importantly, feared gang in the lands of Vice City and in parts of Liberty City.
Tragedy struck the ARR one humid afternoon. The Republic’s founder, Assassin, was gunned down by an opposing syndicate. His death put Genocide in charge of the mighty organization, although rumors still exist that he had orchestrated Assassin’s murder…
Join the Republic now. Join the revolution.
