First time using Photoshop.

I've got no problem at all with the outcome of the image, it looks fairly decent, and you got the effect you wanted.

The part I don't like is:

When you start using photoshop, don't just default to brushes. You should use custom brushes to enhance what you can already do in photoshop, not the other way around. You might become dependant on brushes to make images, and they all end up looking samey. If you experiment with photoshop thoroughly, you'll find you can get far better effects than those generated by brushes. If you combine other techniques with brushes, fine - look at TM, he does some really cool stuff with brushes, but he's worked at developing a really unique style out of it. Yes, some effects can only be easily acheived with brushes (blood, smoke, etc.), but there's more to it than that. I've been using photoshop for 2 and a half years now, and have only 3 brush packs (angryblue's 2 and a smoke pack for ease), because i just find it's more rewarding, both in the outcome and self sense. I'd rather work really hard on something, find out 2 or 3 new techniques which i never knew i could do before, and turn out some shit work, than do constantly decent work with the same old effects.

The best part of being a designer, for me, is finding out new techniques, new styles, new effects everyday. If you want to get into it, don't put a stranglehold on it. Broaden your horizons.

Afterthoughts:

1) Not a dig / insult at you, more of a general note than anything, if you weren't planning to just use brushes, apologies. :)

2) Fuck capitalizing i's - shift is too far away.

3) Apologies also that the only time i post whilst my PC is broken is to rant. Back soon, hopefully.

Try this:

If you have the .PSD, open it up. Select the text, then go onto Layer > Layer Style > Blending options, and play around with all the settings, just to suit your needs. You can even change the opacity (Transparency) from 0& to 100%, play around with that and see what happens too. As well, if you have those brushes on a different layer (Wasn't placed on the black background) do the same thing you did to the text, and see where that goes.

Also try adding a border as well. To do it, you must select the whole document, and then go onto Edit > Stroke. Make play around with the settings, and you're done (Make sure you've created a new layer if you want this to work, and make sure that the stroke is "Inside", so you can see the border. Play around the with the Borders px and you should come to something good.

Oh and listen to Llama, making brushes is way better than getting them off the net, I do it sometimes, and I have a shit load of custom made brushes, play around with photoshop and create some brushes, it does sound hard, but trust me, much more fun and gives you a whole better stance when it comes photoshop. You'll also find it much more easier each time you do it. Of course, if you don't like doing that, then fine - You can use brushes off the net, but make sure you've positioned them correctly, like my sig. I've used most brushes on my sig, but when it comes to the splash effect, I use simple brushes (The ones which are default and come with photoshop and place it anywhere, then use the smudge tool, now it looks awesome.

Try this stuff out, you can develop such awesome work from it, it does take time, but I believe it's worth doing. I've spent up to 2 years on using PS, and it's already a bloody brilliant software to use, it will take time like I said, but this software can completely make life easier when it comes to general graphics/Art work.

Hope this helps mate.
