I believe that GTA:VC is the best and most balanced game in the series, but I still have a preference GTA3 for its atmosphere, its very memorable locale, and its solid storyline (a silent protaganist looking for revenge, sure it's a simple concept, but it's pulled off REALLY well in GTA3), and also for the fact that GTA3 was the biggest step the series ever took; GTA3 was truly revolutionary. It's the game that made the series what it is today, and every subsequent game has built on GTA3's success. GTA:SA is a great game, but it just doesn't top the others in my opinion, even with all it's features. It just doesn't feel as genuine and solid as the others. With all the different mini-games and missions and gangs and the (pretty ridiculous, really) storyline, the game feels... unfocused. San Andreas is vast, but it's like a chaotic amalgamation of all sorts of conflicting elements and themes. Firstly you've got the desperately poor atmosphere of the ghetto, then you've got absurd extreme sports, skydiving, jet fighters, casinos, street racing, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game, but despite the fact that GTA:SA takes the gritty route in the storyline for the most part, I think it's the least believable game in the series overall. The game tries to be gritty and serious in the storyline, all the while trying (perhaps a little too hard at times) to maintain the edgy, satirical humour characteristic of the series, it often feels at odds with itself. Add to this various stupid design decisions (you can modify cars and you can participate in street races, but you can't use the cars you modify in those races, what were they thinking?), and that the PC version of the game is unacceptably buggy (Half of the models are broken and lack specular lighting, for just one example), and I just can't name it my favourite. I repeat it again my list would be: 1. San Andreas 2. Vice City Stories 3. GTA III 4. Liberty City Stories 5. Vice City 6. GTA 4 (???) I haven't played GTA4 much to judge it..
