My aunt's asking me to build a new rig

OK, so she asked me for some plans on shopping for a PC, since her daughter (the one whom I taught to play GTASA ealier) needs one for school. I did a quick search for components that might suit her needs, plus a videocard just in case:

  • Intel Pentium Dual E5200 - 3670
  • Intel DG31PR G31 - 2920
  • Transcend 2GB 667/800 DDR2 - 1,270.00
  • Seagate Barracuda 160gb SATA - 2,210.00
  • Inno3D 9400GT 512ddr2 128bit - 2,110.00
  • Enermax 400w ELT400AWT - 2,800.00
  • 17" Viewsonic VA1701 - 6,320.00

Total: PHP 21300

I need to keep the price under PHP25K, or roughly $500. Any suggestions for the system specs or something?

I don't think high end stuff is relevant in this case though. What you've posted there is most likely fine for her. I suppose Steam has a point with a bigger power supply though to help the future upgrade potential. 400W is pretty low even these days. Granted it's probably enough for her but you never know.

Yeah, agreed on that. A decent power supply does the trick better than an el cheapo one that's going to fail in a year or two. I plan on installing Windows 7 on it, although it is indeed crappy at software sometimes; Madeline 2nd Grade Math crashes when I try to run it even on Windows 9x mode, unless if I dual-boot to XP or run it under Virtual PC. I was thinking of picking a certain Core 2 Duo flavour that supports Virtual PC for 7 (the one that allows you to run XP seamlessly with 7), but I dunno if PC Express has one in stock.

450 Watt should be enough..

But really, pentium dual cores?

I'm sure you can get better for 500 USD.

Get some shitty case and a 450 Watt PSU (or more, of course)

9500GT or something like that.. even a 8400 card should do.

E7200 (cheap, but good CPU)

Some LGA775 mobo.. I dunno, P35 might be overkill. I don't know anything about those P31's, but maybe something like that..

4GB RAM. Cheap as hell anyway. Maybe 2 if you insist...

Drop in 500GB and she's good to go and I think that still is under 500 USD.

Though you did mention a monitor in your first post.. She doesn't already have one?

She's a noob at that, so it'll be her first rig. 4GB is fine but I'm not really into building a GTA IV-ready machine for her I guess. I was also planning on finding a pink computer case FTW, too.

these prices are in AUD and regularly updated.

500 USD = 580 AUD right now according to google.

RAM: Kingston 4GB DDR2-800 $72

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB $64

GPU: Gigabyte 512MB ATI Radeon HD4670 $88

Case & PSU: Cooler Master CAC-T05 (Centurion 5) w/ 460W Coolermaster PSU $113

Case & PSU: Cooler Master CAC-T05 (Centurion 5) w/ 460W Coolermaster PSU $113

Optical Drive: SATA DVD-RW $65

Total: $596

ohh i just noticed you need to include monitor in that price...umm in that case

$600 Intel "Business/Homework/Internet System": updated 11/09/09

CPU: Intel E5300 $85

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L $71

RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2-800 $36

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 500GB $64

GPU: (On-board Intel GMA X4500)

Case & PSU: Cooler Master Elite 335 w/ 420W PSU $75

if you want a decent video card as well you'd probably have to stretch the budget another $70 or more. im not sure whether you need a new case/monitor/kbd/mouse/speakers , they are included in that price too.
